My goal was to identify key pain points experienced by Spotify users and discover opportunities for enhancing the platform to better serve their needs. This research forms the foundation for defining prioritized problem statements that could guide future product development decisions.
My discovery process focused primarily on user surveys to understand usage patterns, needs, and frustrations with Spotify:
The survey of 150 users revealed critical insights about how different user segments interact with Spotify and the challenges they face. These insights formed the basis for identifying key pain points across different user types.

How might we enhance music discovery beyond algorithmic recommendations to help users find new music that matches their tastes and expands their horizons?
How might we create more meaningful social and community experiences around music to strengthen connections between users with shared tastes?
How might we reimagine playlist and library organization to help users better manage and navigate their growing collections of saved content?
How might we implement high-fidelity audio options to satisfy audiophile users while maintaining an optimized experience for all listeners?
For this case study, I employed the RICE Scoring Model (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort) to prioritize the identified problem statements. This framework was selected because it balances potential user impact with implementation considerations, making it ideal for product development decisions.
The prioritization process followed these steps:
Criteria | Description | Scale |
---|---|---|
Reach | Number of users affected in a specified time period | 1-10 |
Impact | Effect on user behavior if problem is solved | 0.25-3.0 |
Confidence | Certainty in estimates of reach, impact, and effort | 0-100% |
Effort | Person-months required to implement solution | 1-10 |
Problem Statement | Reach (1-10) | Impact (0.25-3.0) | Confidence (%) | Effort (1-10) | RICE Score | Rank |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Enhanced Discovery Tools | 9 | 2 | 80% | 5 | 2.88 | 1 |
Playlist Organization System | 8 | 1.5 | 90% | 4 | 2.7 | 2 |
Community-Building Features | 7 | 2 | 70% | 8 | 1.23 | 3 |
Hi-Fi Audio Implementation | 5 | 1 | 90% | 6 | 0.75 | 4 |
After evaluating the potential approaches, I developed a comprehensive solution that combines elements from the highest-scoring concepts into a cohesive feature called Spotify Pathfinder.
Spotify Pathfinder is a multi-modal discovery system that empowers users to explore music through different lenses beyond traditional algorithmic recommendations. It integrates into the existing Spotify interface while providing fresh ways to discover content based on user intent and exploration preferences.
Users access Pathfinder through a new "Discover" section in the main navigation
Choose between Comfort Zone, Adventure, or Heritage exploration modes
Optional configuration of discovery parameters
Interactive navigation through music based on selected mode
View background information and relationships while listening
Add discoveries to library or share journey with friends
Rate discoveries to improve future recommendations
